ALEXANDER ROSS BAG
8th August 2007
An Italian group of thirteen (12 adults, one child), with Khaled Makram of Oscar Tours (12 Talaat Harb Street, Down Town, Cairo, Egypt) as their tour guide were heading towards "Camp Chianti", the site used as a camp by Lazlo Almasy (on whom the "English Patient" was based) in the early 1930's when he was exploring this area. Camp Chianti is just west of the Gilf Kebir, a large plateau the size of Switzerland in the South West corner of Egypt. The site is just a few kilometres from the "Cave of Swimmers", which also featured in "The English Patient"
The bag was first spotted laying on the ground by Paolo Chiodi, who was with Sandra Orselli in their car. They stopped to examine the bag and were amazed to discover a treasure of letters, photographs and other items which, so it turned out, belonged to Alexander Ross and which had been dropped while he was passing through this area in 1942. Alexander Ross was in the Signals Corps, attached to the Long Range Desert Group.
On seeing that Paolo Chiodi and Sandra Orselli had stopped, the others in the group returned to see why and then helped Paolo and Sandra collect up and gather the contents of the bag, which were by now blowing around in the wind.
It was agreed that Khaled Makram should take charge of the bag, find Alexander Ross and return the bag to him – or to his family if he was not still alive.
The sister of Alexander Ross, Irene Porter, was traced on the Internet from the BBC Radio Lancashire website.

Some rolls of film negatives were also found in the bag. These were taken by Andras Zboray, of Fleigel Jezerniczky Expeditions,
http://www.fjexpeditions.com to the National Film Archives in Hungary, who succeeded in the delicate task of unrolling the now extremely brittle negative film and taking some prints off the negatives. Khaled Makram has also brought the negatives and the resulting prints to be presented to Irene Porter.
