GIBA: quattro lettere, una parola e, per alcuni, poco significato.
Giba è un artista.
In tutti i sensi. Perché lo è di professione e, soprattutto, per disposizione. Nel suo curriculum c’è, infatti una lunga carriera di fotografo che lo ha spinto a documentarsi con partecipazione usi e costumi delle genti d’Africa.
L’aspetto documentaristico, dipanatosi attraverso la collaborazione con note agenzie giornalistiche milanesi (Olimpia e FarabolaPhoto), non è mai stato determinato da letture, spesso troppo fredde, di obiettivi maneggiati con tecnica ottima ma senza anima.
Al contrario, la fotografia è stata per Giba il primo mezzo di espressione della sua partecipazione alla quotidianità africana e significativo strumento di comunicazione della sua esperienza. Oggi si potrebbe dire che i suoi primi reportage furono già strumenti di comunicazione interculturale.
Tanto è vero che il fotografo cresce con i suoi numerosi viaggi: la sua espressività diventa pittura, diventa scultura, diventa materia artistica della più variegata, diventa tecnologia computerizzata per la rielaborazione delle immagini. Si tratta di una ricerca continua lungo le piste del deserto e le strade dell’arte.
Artista e viaggiatore, d’altra parte, hanno in comune la curiosità e l’inquietudine che spinge sempre oltre l’orizzonte, che pone sempre la domanda di che cosa c’è dopo quell’ostacolo che preclude lo sguardo e l’immaginazione.
Per questo il viaggio occupa un posto prioritario nella vita di Giba che ha ficcato il naso in tutto il Continente ed è sempre tornato – già questo per i luoghi delle sue peregrinazioni è un successo! – con conoscenze e sensibilità che si sono tradotte in nuove opere: immagini interpretate.
Le opere di Giba sono presenti in diverse collezioni private italiane: (Brescia, Cremona, Pavia, Bergamo, Lecco, Como, Varese, Milano, Firenze, Roma, Siracusa).
Presente all’estero: (Parigi, Madrid, Barcellona, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Londra, Toronto, NewYork).
GIBA is an artist. Art is his profession, his passion, his life.
For most of his lifetime he has been working as a photographer. Taking photographs and travelling all over Africa gave him the opportunity to meet and participate to the life and customs of a great number of african tribes.
The documentary insight he acquired through his cooperation with several photo-agencies in Milan (Olimpia and Farabola Photo) has never been determined by what he learned in books, neither was technical perfection predominant to his personal emotions. Giba’s photographs appeal to us for the simple reason they express human feelings.
Photography has always been a way to express his participation to daily life of the africans, an instrument to comunicate his experience and personal feelings. One could say from the very beginning his first photographic records were already a means of intercultural communication.
In fact, his travelling in Africa deeply marked GiBa. His way of expressing himself became painting, sculpture and he would use just any type of material he could find to produce some art piece. He also familiarized with computer technology in connection with photography. His life is dedicated to a constant research along the tracks of the desert, the streets of art and the highways of technology.
The artist and the explorer have in common their curiosity and restlessness, which are pushing GiBa beyond every horizon. He always wants to know what is to be seen beyond the limit that stops our view and our imagination. Therefore travelling is a priority in Giba’s life. He went through most african countries and always returned home with e better knowledge and more sensitivity towards art, which inevitably forced him to create new works…
Several private collections own GIBA’s paintings and sculptures in Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, England and Canada, Spain.
